5.8 Magnitude Earthquake Rattles Virginia, Washington, D.C.
August 24th, 2011 - 1:56 am ICT by Aishwarya BhattWashington, Aug 23 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A 5.8 magnitude earthquake has struck Virginia. The quake was felt in Washington, New York and North Carolina. The U.S. Geological Survey reported that the quake struck on Tuesday at about 1:51 p.m.
USGS reports that they expect some damages to be done to old buildings at the epicenter of the quake. Residents at the affected parts have been warned that they should expect several aftershocks in the hours following the quake.
USGS seismologist Lucy Jones informed CNN that, “It’s one of the largest that we’ve had there. People should be expecting (them), especially over the next hour or two.”
The quake has raised concerns for the safety of gas and pipe lines. Several residents felt the quake and those in high rising buildings say they felt the structures shaking.
A lawyer who happened to be in a skyscraper in midtown Manhattan when the quake struck told newsmen that, “Our building was shaking the way a skyscraper isn’t supposed to shake.”
Details are still emerging about the quake but no casualties have so far been announced.
This year Japan experienced a 9.0 earthquake and a subsequent tsunami which killed more than 25,000 people.
