350 couples marry in Bolivia

La Paz, May 10 (THAINDIAN NEWS) There was a mass wedding in Bolivia over the weekend. About 350 couples were involved in the Andean wedding ceremony which was held in the country’s capital, La Paz.

The Bolivian President Evo Morales graced the occasion when he played the role of the best man to all the grooms during the wedding. Before the wedding, the couples were first married in civil ceremonies.

During the wedding, the couples wore colourful traditional outfits with hats. President Morales gave a speech to the newlyweds after the ceremony. Traditional leaders in the country were also present at the ceremony which was held at a colosseum with spiritual heads officiating the ceremony. The venue was decorated with banners and white flowers.

President Evo Morales became the 80th leader of Bolivia after he was elected as the leader of the country in December of 2005. He is a native of the Aymara family and has been involved in implementing socialist reforms in the country since he took office in 2006.

He is seen as a hero among native Bolivians and his popularity soared in the last election which was held on December of 2009 when he received 63 percent of the votes.
