May 20 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A 53 year old college professor, Ma Yaohai, and 21 people who were regular visitors in his home went on trial last month in a southeastern city in China by the name of Nanjing on charges of “group licentiousness” which is a fancy way of saying “orgy”. It was the first time anyone had actually been charged under the law which went on the books in 1997, and the case has caught public attention everywhere.
These people were members of a new group from an old lifestyle known as swingers. Ma Yaohai started the group with an online sexual group which he formed back in 2003. He was placed on trial along with the 14 men and 8 women who met often at his home to perform in theses “sex parties”. Among those who were arrested in this case were taxi driver, sales clerks, white collar workers.
The trial has sparked the interest of the Chinese public because many citizens feel that the law is hypocrisy within the Chinese government. For the public to rise up and speak out about what a person can do inside their own home in unusual in China, where freedom of speech is non-existent. The citizens of China feel that the government has nor right to interfere in what goes on inside a home if it concerns consenting adults. The professor was sentenced to three and a half years in a Chinese prison, however, although his lawyer plans to appeal.
