$33 billion lying around in unclaimed money in the government treasury
May 14th, 2010 - 7:06 pm ICT by Aishwarya BhattWashington DC, May 14 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Officials of National Association of Unclaimed Property Administrators in the United States of America say that there is a whooping $33 billion in assets lying around in the government treasury and other agencies that has not been claimed as yet.
Some of the funds come from very strange places that are even hard to imagine. If you have failed to properly close your savings or current account, then chances are that you have contributed to the amount sitting at the treasury to be claimed. Some of the funds also come from unclaimed insurance, paychecks that have not been cashed, refunds that have not been claimed and over-payments by customers.
There is a way you can know if you are part of those who have contributed their money to the ‘missing money’. Currently residents of forty states can enter their names and their states to see if a record about them and their unclaimed funds pop up at www.missingmoney.com. And this information can be gotten absolutely free of cost.
Officials say claiming your money can take few weeks and you need to provide your Social Security number and your personal information to the government along with any identification. This can also be done online on the website www.missingmoney.com
