16 killed, 21 injured in road accident in Tibet
March 15th, 2011 - 3:36 am ICT by BNO NewsLHASA, TIBET (BNO NEWS) — A road accident on Monday left at least 16 people dead and 21 others injured in southwest China’s Tibet autonomous region, the state-run Xinhua news agency reported.
The accident took place at about 7:50 a.m. local time at the Baxoi sector of the G318 Highway. The road connects Tibet and China’s Sichuan Province. The fatal event involved a passenger bus.
Authorities did not inform how the accident involving the coach occurred. It was not disclosed as well how many passengers the bus registered in Nyingchi Prefecture had on board.
Nine people died at the scene and seven more died later due to the severe wounds sustained. The other 21 injured individuals were transported to nearby medical facilities.
Last Friday, another accident involving a bus took place in the area. At least 16 people were killed after a coach plunged into a ravine in northwest China’s Xinjiang Uygur autonomous region.
The incident took place at about 10 a.m. when the bus veered off in a highway that links Xinjiang with Tibet in the Kashgar region. In addition, 24 other passengers were injured.
The bus was carrying 42 people, including the driver who escaped without injuries. The bus was heading to Tibet and is registered with the Tibet Antelope Coach Service Company.
