Nov 5 (THAINDIAN NEWS) When doctors had to remove a cancerous tumor from the leg of fourteen year old Simon Fairburn, everyone feared that the leg would have to be amputated. With a foot of bone gone, everyone was fearing the worst.

Dr Geoff Donald at Great Ormond Street Hospital was able to save the boy’s leg, however, using new treatment for growing bones which took two years. He underwent twenty procedures and had to be bed ridden for months. After attaching tiny screws to the remaining bone four times each day, Simon was able to guide the bone to grow a fraction of an inch each time.

According to the Daily Mail, Simon said, “There were some days where I thought I might never be able to walk again, but I tried to keep them out and only think positive thoughts in my head. The brace was really weird for the first few months but the more times I looked at it I started to get more relaxed with it. I never thought about giving up turning the screws I would always do them - but there were times when I would skip a few days accidentally and the next day I would have to double it just to keep up again.”
