Carson City, July 16 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A roundup in Nevada ordered by the U.S. Bureau of Land Management has led to the death of twelve wild horses. Four other animals died from toxic water and dehydration on Wednesday according to the BLM.

Desperate measures were also being taken to transfer water to the area. A temporary restraining order being sought by animal rights campaigners to stop the roundup in northern Elko County. A court hearing was held on Thursday by a federal judge, to look into the matter.

BLM was scheduled to undertake a roundup on Thursday at 6 am but US district court judge Larry Hicks issued an emergency later on Wednesday to prevent any more roundups until after the hearing.

Horse protection groups have been angry at the deaths being caused by the roundups and said the deaths were expected due to the weather condition in the area at the moment. Two animals were euthanized “because of complications related to water starvation and water intoxication,” according to the agency.

BLM has however defended the roundups saying that the population of wild horses is growing overboard leading to fierce competition over food and water. The roundups are meant to remove over 12000 mustangs from the Nevada area.
