July 16, 2010 (Pen Men at Work): The US Bureau of Land Management has managed to kill 12 wild horses in a roundup in Nevada. The reports reveal that the majority of them were mares and colts.

The organization further revealed that more of the animals were dead or dying due to lack of water. Intoxication by water was also revealed to be a cause. The Land Management agency announced its intentions of providing water by trucks to the affected areas. They have also reported the existence of a large band of mustangs within the area of the round up.

The animal rights activists have porotested against the roundup and the federal judge has ordered for a restraint temporarily. The hearing is scheduled on Tuesday at Reno.

The agency had to halt their operations when a large number of horses died while being being herded with the aid of a helicopter. Another broke its leg and had to be gunned down.

Monday saw another two of the horses succumbing to dehydration and an additional two had to put out of mercy due to water related complications as well.

The BLM spokesperson, Heather Emmons said that the horses looked quite healthy and the symptoms of dehydration was difficult to detect in them. Most of them developed colic or swelling in the brain due to drinking copious quantities of water after being dehydrated for a long time. The director of the agency has also said that the situation would be treated as an emergency.

The BLM is responsible for managing the wild horses most of which are found in the state of Nevada. The population is required to be brought down to manageable levels from time to time failing which they may run out of food. The 1971 Wild Horse and Burro Act protects the animals federally.
