Apr 20 (THAINDIAN NEWS) A very heated debate is raging today in Mexico on the abortion issue. This fight involves a 10 year old who was allegedly raped by her stepfather and abortion advocacy groups, the United Nations, and the federal government.

The advocacy groups are calling for the United Nations and the federal government of Mexico to launch an investigation in order to determine whether or not the local officials told the little girl of her rights. The story is currently being reported by CNN news.

“We don’t know what is happening,” said Maria Luisa Sanchez Fuentes of the Information Group on Reproductive Choice. “We’re really asking for accountability.” The girl lives in the state of Quintana Roo, where abortions are limited to rape victims only and must be performed within the first 90 days of pregnancy. The child is currently almost a month past the legal limit for the state’s approval for the procedure. She is currently in protective custody, and cannot get the abortion without the approval of the state government. In the capital of Mexico, Mexico City, abortions are legal, but in 90% of the country they must be done in the first three months.

The child is now waiting to have psychological and physical care for her and the baby. State lawmaker Maria Hadad says continuing the pregnancy could cause the 10-year-old severe mental and physical health problems.”It’s not just a high-risk pregnancy,” Hadad said. “It’s a pregnancy that puts the girl at risk.”
