Zed stresses urgent need of decent homes for world’s billion slum dwellers
October 2nd, 2010 - 4:22 pm ICT by ANINevada (US), Oct 2 (ANI): World seemed to be continually ignoring the plight of about one billion slum dwellers while celebrating “World Habitat Day” which falls on October four, renowned Hindu statesman Rajan Zed stated in Nevada (USA) today.
Zed, who is President of Universal Society of Hinduism, argued that world should instead be hanging down its head with shame when so many of our brothers and sisters toiled in slums and their number was increasing. Instead of coming out with solutions, massive forced evictions of slum dwellers were still being carried out around the world, as we saw recent evictions of Roma (Gypsy) in France and various other countries of Europe.
Rajan Zed further said that forced evictions and dismantling of settlements, without alternate provision of suitable accommodation and adequate compensation, should be immediately stopped. People living in slums were still human beings like anybody else and they had rights which needed to be protected.
Every world citizen, irrespective of his/her economic-cultural-racial-educational-etc. background, deserved a decent and safe basic shelter
