Zardari meets Kayani

Islamabad, Jan 20 (IANS) Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari and army chief General Ashfaq Parvez Kayani met at an informal tea party Friday hosted at the presidency following an award ceremony to honour the country’s naval chief Admiral Asif Sandila.
Sandila was decorated with the Nishan-e-Imtiaz, one of the country’s highest honours given to civilians for their outstanding contributions to the society.
Both officials discussed the recommendations of the parliamentary committee in regard to the Nov 26 NATO attack on two border checkposts that killed 24 Pakistani soldiers, Geo TV reported.
The meeting comes a day after Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani made his submission before the Supreme Court on a contempt notice served to him for not taking action against Zardari, accused of corruption during his wife Benazir Bhutto’s two stints as premier.
Gilani told a seven-member apex court bench that the constitution provides immunity to the president. The case will now be heard Feb 1.
Relations between Zardari and Kayani have strained after Pakistani-American businessman Mansoor Ijaz claimed to have delivered a secret memo to the then US Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Mike Mullen last year at the behest of the then envoy to the US Husain Haqqani and the Pakistani government to avert a likely military coup. The claim created a scandal and generated much heat in Pakistan.
A three-member commission, constituted by the Supreme Court, headed by Balochistan High Court Chief Justice Qazi Faiz, is hearing the case.
