Young Brazilian model loses hands, feet to infectionJanuary 22nd, 2009 - 3:12 pm ICT by IANS
Rio de Janeiro, Jan 22 (IANS) A 20-year-old Brazilian model who represented her country in international competitions had to have her hands and feet amputated because of an infection and is now fighting for her life in hospital, local media reported.Mariana Bridi was twice a finalist in local beauty contests in 2006 and 2007 putting her in the running - although ultimately she was not selected - for Brazil’s Miss World candidate, EFE reported.
She also represented her country in the Miss Bikini International contest in 2007 where she won the prize for having the most beautiful body and came in sixth in the overall competition in a field of 50 contestants.
The young woman began to have health problems at the end of last year and was hospitalised Dec 30 in an Espiritu Santo state hospital with a urinary tract infection.
The southeastern state’s health secretariat said that she was transferred Jan 3 to Dorio Silva Hospital in the state capital of Vitoria suffering from “septic shock caused by staphylococcus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria”.
“The patient had a prognosis aggravated by acute renal insufficiency, compression of the peripheral blood vessels and necrosis of the hands and feet caused by septicemia (or blood poisoning),” the secretariat said.
After the amputation of her extremities, Bridi suffered an internal haemorrhage and was operated on once again Wednesday afternoon, people close to her told local media.
Her boyfriend, Thiago Simoes, told the G1 news Web site Dec 30 that she was diagnosed in the first hospital with renal colic, but that condition was alleviated with certain medications.
However, after that, she developed a urinary infection that spread throughout her body, resulting in a lack of oxygen getting to her extremities, which finally required their amputation.
