Yemeni militant group on US terror list
January 20th, 2010 - 9:48 am ICT by IANSWashington, Jan 20 (IANS) The US has included a Yemeni militant group linked to the Al Qaeda terrorist network on its terror list, an Official said.
Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP), accused of masterminding attacks in Saudi Arabia, South Korea as well as the failed bombing attempt on Detroit-bound plane on the Christmas day, has been listed among foreign terrorist outfits.
The decision was taken by Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton after consultation with the Attorney General Eric Holder and the Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner, State Department spokesman Philip Crowley said in a statement Tuesday.
“These actions prohibit provision of material support and arms to AQAP and also include immigration related restrictions that will help stem the flow of finances to AQAP and give the Department of Justice the tools it needs to prosecute AQAP members,” Xinhua quoted Crowley as saying.
The spokesman said the US has been trying to make all UN member states to take similar actions, including asset freeze, travel ban, and arms embargo against the group.
“We are determined to eliminate AQAP’s ability to execute violent attacks and to disrupt, dismantle, and defeat their networks,” he added.
