Melbourne, Dec 21 (ANI): Indian born doctor Mohamed Haneef, who was wrongly implicated by the Australian Federal Police, is eagerly awaiting the results of an inquiry into his handling by Australian authorities.

Attorney-General Robert McClelland is expected to publicly release the findings of the inquiry headed by retired judge John Clarke QC early this week, The Australian reported.

Dr Haneefs solicitor Peter Russo said that his client had received regular updates on the progress of the inquiry.

He is obviously very keen, as is his family, to see what the Clarke report contains. We are really waiting in anticipation - we obviously have no idea what’’s in the report other than what we have been able to glean off the inquirys webpage, he said.

McClelland received Clarkes final report on the matter in November. The inquiry was launched in April to investigate the botched handling of the case against Dr Haneef.

Dr Haneef spent two weeks in police custody without charge after being arrested while trying to board a flight to Bangalore at Brisbane International Airport in relation to a failed UK terror plot.

The AFP finally wrongly charged him with recklessly providing support to a terrorist organisation for giving his mobile phone SIM card to his cousin Sabeel Ahmed, the brother of Kafeel Ahmed who died after driving the flaming jeep into Glasgow Airport.

The charge collapsed within days, but Dr Haneef was unable to return to his job at the Gold Coast Hospital because of a fight with the Department of Immigration over his visa.

The inquiry revealed a gulf of difference between the various Australian agencies attitudes to Dr Haneef and the handling of the case. (ANI)
