World Bank provides $100 mn for Haiti emergency
January 14th, 2010 - 7:26 am ICT by IANSWashington, Jan 14 (DPA) The World Bank is providing $100 million in emergency money for Haiti’s recovery and reconstruction after a fierce quake devastated the capital city, the bank said Wednesday.
Tuesday’s magnitude-7 earthquake flattened large areas of the Haitian capital Port-au-Prince, leaving tens of thousands, perhaps more than 100,000, dead, Haitian officials have said.
“This is a shocking event and it is crucial that the international community supports the Haitian people at this critical time,” World Bank president Robert Zoellick said in a statement.
The World Bank was sending a team to assess damage and reconstruction costs, Zoellick said.
