London, June 2 (IANS) A 51-year-old woman has died after plunging over the Niagara Falls, a media report said Thursday.

Tourists watched the accident in utter horror as the woman, who was swimming in the river above the Horseshoe Falls, was caught in the rapids and was thrown over to her death, Daily Mail reported.

The unnamed woman, who was from Toronto, would have fallen 53 metres to the river below at a speed of about 32 km per hour, the report added.

The woman looked to be alive when she went over Tuesday afternoon but had died by the time rescuers reached her in the river below, said witnesses.

Tourists called up the authorities as they watched the woman being swept towards the waterfall’s edge.

Rescuers were on the scene as the woman neared the Falls. They were forced to watch helplessly as she plummeted over them, said witnesses on the Maid of the Mist tourist boat.

“She was floating with her eyes closed,” said Toronto resident Laura Bustos, who was among a crowd of about 30 people watching.

“She went past us. She went over the falls,” she told the Toronto Sun.

The woman’s body was pulled from the river at about 4.45 p.m. Tuesday by crew members on board the Maid of the Mist. She is yet to be identified.
