Wikileaks investigators fail to link Assange to prime suspect Bradley Manning
January 26th, 2011 - 5:57 pm ICT by ANIWashington, Jan 26 (ANI): Investigators trying to find a loophole that allowed ‘Wikileaks’ to get access to thousands of US secret diplomatic cables, have failed to establish a link between Private Bradley Manning, the prime suspect, and the whistleblower website’s founder, Julian Assange.
Despite confirming that 23-year-old Manning had unlawfully downloaded documents and passed them to an unauthorised person, investigators have admitted that they lack evidence that he had passed on the information to Assange, The Telegraph reports.
Last month, Assange had claimed that WikiLeaks did not know if Manning, who is in solitary confinement at a military facility in Quantico, Virginia, was the source of the classified documents.
Terming the allegations that WikiLeaks had conspired with Pte Manning as “nonsense,” Assange said: “That’s not how our technology works, that’s not how our organisation works. I never heard of the name of Bradley Manning before it appeared in the media.”
The release of these secret US diplomatic documents had created a controversy across the world.
Assange, an Australian, is currently in London fighting extradition to Sweden for allegedly sexual assaulting two women. He has denied the allegations.
US Attorney General Eric Holder had earlier said the Obama administration is considering whether it can prosecute the release of information under the Espionage Act. (ANI)
