We are not a soft state: ChidambaramMay 18th, 2008 - 7:50 pm ICT by admin
Jalandhar, May 18 (IANS) While India is tolerant and respects human rights, it should not be mistaken for a “soft state”, Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said here Sunday. “We are only tolerant. We respect human rights and law. Our tolerance and respect for human rights and law should not be misunderstood. We are fully competent to fight against any kind of terrorism and would frustrate the evil designs of divisive forces,” Chidambaram told a gathering at a function organized by Punjab’s leading media group Punjab Kesari to honour the kin of terrorist victims.
“Both terrorism and terrorists are enemies of humanity. No country is immune to terrorism today. There were days when Punjab was reeling under terrorism. Punjab suffered, all Punjabis suffered and along with them the whole of India suffered. But owing to the cooperation of the people of the state, this phenomenon has become a thing of the past,” the minister said.
Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda also lauded the efforts of Punjabis in defeating the designs of terrorists.
Several families of victims of terrorism were honoured and given financial help at the function.
