War on terror not over: Tony Blair
September 11th, 2011 - 7:22 pm ICT by IANSLondon, Sep 11 (IANS) Former British prime minister Tony Blair says that even though “significant blows” have been struck in the war against terror, “it’s not over”.
Blair said it was “deeply naive” to believe the response of the West had radicalised extremist Muslim factions.
“It is not because of something we’re doing to them. They believe in what they believe in because they believe their religion compels them to believe in it,” the Daily Express quoted the former prime minister as saying.
He said the terror threat would take some time to be defeated.
“I think it will take a generation, but the way to defeat this ideology ultimately is by a better idea, and we have it, which is a way of life based on openness, democracy, freedom and the rule of law,” Blair said.
Blair, who was the prime minister during the 9/11 terror attacks, currently works for the Mideast Quartet — comprising the US, the UN, Russia and the EU. The quartet mediates the Israel-Palestine peace process.
