tombs Kampala, Mar 18 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Violence has spread in Uganda after 4 royal tombs were destroyed in a fire. The fire has sadly destroyed most of the UNESCO World Heritage site, which had the royal tombs of the kings of the Buganda region. How the fire started and what could be the possible causes are still a mystery. Demonstrators and loyalists of the king caused a riot near the burnt tombs. The loyalists became more furious, after the military started to move them away from the location of the burnt tombs.

The President Yoweri Museveni also wanted to visit the Kasubi tombs near Kampala to see the burnt out tombs, but he was barred from visiting the site, as the loyalists of the king blocked his convoy. In the violence that followed the fire, 2 loyalists were killed and several people were wounded also.

The site was a world heritage site endorsed by the UNESCO. The citation near the tombs read that, “It is a major example of an architectural achievement in organic materials, principally wood, thatch, reed, wattle and daub. The site’s main significance lies, however, in its intangible values of belief, spirituality, continuity and identity.”
