Vermont student sues college over co-ed bathrooms in dorms!
December 23rd, 2009 - 4:56 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )New York, Dec 23 (ANI): A college freshman in Vermont has filed a lawsuit against her school for not providing separate bathrooms for men and women, according to reports.
InsideHigherEd.com has reported that Jennifer Weiler, a student at Green Mountain College, had complained to the school.
And though they assigned one of the bathrooms exclusively to women, they didn’t enforce the rule, and male students continued to use the facility.
“The men just disrobe in the middle of the room,” despite there being curtains on the showers and doors on the toilet stalls, the New York Daily News quoted her father Ron Weiler as saying.
Weiler said the state building codes require public buildings — presumably including dormitories — to have both men’s and women’s bathrooms.
But he claimed that his complaints to the college and to state officials fell on deaf ears.
“What we have is that it’s seen as politically incorrect to interfere with what goes on on college campuses,” said Weiler.
On the other hand, gender advocacy groups encouraged the creation of co-ed bathrooms, or even single-stall bathrooms, so transgender students don’t have to choose a gender assignment when it comes to the loo. (ANI)
