London, Apr. 3 (ANI): Troops loyal to Libyan leader Colonel Muammar Gaddafi have renewed their assault on rebel-held Misrata in a final push to crush the opposition that rose up against him six weeks ago The Libyan army unleashed a remorseless barrage of tank fire and artillery shells yesterday amid fresh reports from residents that soldiers are indiscriminately killing and kidnapping men and raping women as they forced their way, house by house, towards the centre.According to The Telegraph, the renewed assault came as 14 rebels were killed by a NATO air strike 200 miles to the east.

But as the main frontline between rebels and government forces remained somewhere near the outskirts of the oil town of Brega last night it was in Misurata that the Gaddafi regime appeared to be making its most violent push.

So far, some 243 have been killed and at least 1,000 wounded in more than a month and a half of fighting. (ANI)
