US supports emergency humanitarian aid to North Korea
August 6th, 2011 - 7:32 am ICT by IANSWashington, Aug 6 (IANS) The US supports emergency humanitarian aid to flood-stricken North Korea, the State Department said.
“The US supports emergency humanitarian assistance to the people of North Korea in accordance with international standards for monitoring,” Xinhua reported quoting a State Department statement.
The statement said America’s humanitarian aid “is not linked to any political or security issues”.
It said the US remained concerned about “the well-being” of the people in North Korea, but “no additional aid has been requested at this time”.
Recent heavy rains and flooding in North Korea from late June to mid-July have killed at least 30 people and destroyed more than 6,750 houses, local media reported.
The last US food assistance programme to North Korea was suspended in March 2009. In May, US officials travelled to the country to assess the food situation there, but no decision on the food aid has been made yet.
