US stands ready to support India in dealing with ‘horrific’ Mumbai attacks (Lead)
November 27th, 2008 - 4:35 am ICT by IANSWashington, Nov 27 (IANS) The United States has strongly condemned a series of “horrific attacks” in the Indian financial capital of Mumbai and said it stands ready to support the Indian authorities as they deal with the situation.”We strongly condemn the terrorist attacks that have taken place in Mumbai, India. Our sympathies go out to the families and friends of those killed and injured, and to the people of Mumbai,” the State Department said in statement Wednesday.
“We are monitoring the situation very closely and stand ready to support the Indian authorities as they deal with this horrific series of attacks,” it said.
At this point, the State Department was not aware of any American casualties in the attacks, in which scores of people were killed and hundreds wounded.
In a separate statement, Ben Chang, a spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said: “We condemn these attacks and the loss of innocent life. We continue to seek more information.”
