US shuttle Endeavor lifts off for final voyage

New York, May 16 (IANS) US space shuttle Endeavor lifted off Monday from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida to deliver to the International Space Station a $2 billion particle detector called the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer.

The shuttle blasted off at about 8.56 a.m. (1256 GMT), Xinhua reported citing NASA TV.

This was the 25th and final flight for the spaceship.

The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer is designed to search for various types of unusual matter by measuring cosmic rays. Its experiments are designed to help researchers study the formation of the universe and search for evidence of dark matter, strange matter and antimatter.
