US Senate endorses new envoy to China

Washington, Aug 8 (Xinhua) The US Senate Friday confirmed Utah Governor Jon Huntsman as new US ambassador to China.
The confirmation came after the Senate Foreign Relations Committee endorsed Huntsman’s nomination Tuesday.
The Senate Friday also confirmed John Roos as new US ambassador to Japan.
Huntsman, 49, was appointed by President Barack Obama as top US diplomat to China in May. He is a member of the Republican Party who was elected the governor of Utah in 2004 and re-elected in 2008.
He also served as US ambassador to Singapore during the administration of George W. Bush.
His predecessor, Clark Randt, resigned Jan 20, when the new administration was sworn in.
