Washington, Dec 20 (ANI): The United Stated has read the riot act to Pakistan despite domestic compulsions of Islamabad, and said that the actions it takes to apprehend those behind the Mumbai terror attacks and truly begin to dismantle their networks will be carefully watched and scrutinised.

Sources said that the riot act was read to Pakistans National Security Adviser Mahmud Ali Durrani, who arrived unannounced here on Wednesday to meet Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Friday.

Rice and Durrani met this morning and they discussed follow-up actions the Pakistan government is taking after the Mumbai terror attacks and how to proceed thoroughly to eliminate this threat posed from groups based on Pakistani soil, said a State Department official.

The Secretary of State made clear our intention to work with Pakistan to achieve these goals, the Daily Times quoted the official, as saying.

Durrani has already held some meetings with US defence and national security officials. The message to Durrani is clear: What Pakistan has done so far is welcome, but it is not enough, the paper said.

Almost daily statements from higher government functionaries in Islamabad about Mumbai terror attacks have by now started to create the impression that Pakistan may have begun to shift its position, Dorrani was told by officials.

Injecting arguments and justifications into the debate that are intended to water down the fact that the Mumbai terrorist attacks were launched from Pakistani soil and that all 10 terrorists were Pakistanis and linked to Lashkar-e-Tayyaba/Jamaatud Dawa, the official said.

Pakistan Foreign Ministers recent remark that the charitable institutions being run by one of the banned outfits would be allowed to continue operating has strengthened the impression that Islamabad may be going into the denial mode. (ANI)
