US predator strikes undermining Pakistani sovereignty: ZardariNovember 15th, 2008 - 12:17 am ICT by IANS
New York, Nov 14 (IANS) The recent escalation in US Predator strikes on Pakistani soil is undermining the sovereignty of Pakistan and would not help in the US winning its war against terror, the country’s president Asif Ali Zardari has said.”It’s undermining my sovereignty, and it’s not helping win the war on the hearts and minds of the people,” Zardari told the CBS news in an interview Thursday.
In recent months, the number of missile attacks by the US inside Pakistani territory, particularly the Federally Administered Tribal Areas (FATA), where the US believes the Taliban and the Al Qaeda have a safe haven, has increased.
A large number of civilians have been killed in the process due to these missile attacks. There have been about 20 US predator strikes in Pakistan since August, reports indicate.
Zardai, however, pleaded helplessness in stopping such attacks from the US forces.
“They do not happen with our knowledge. There is no other technology that I would have which would tell me that a drone is coming in,” Zardai said.
At the same time, he said his government would welcome if Pakistan was informed about such strikes.
