US expands search for weapons of mass destruction to East Africa
April 14th, 2011 - 11:43 am ICT by ANIWashington, Apr.14 (ANI): The United States government is expanding a 20-year-old program to secure and destroy Cold War-era nuclear and other weapons of mass destruction to East Africa, according to the American Chemical Society (ACS).
In an article, which appeared in the Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN), ACS’s weekly newsmagazine, Glenn Hess, C&EN Senior Editor, has said that the focus of the Cooperative Threat Reduction Program (CTR) comes after realizing that some of the world’s deadliest diseases like Ebola, Marburg and Rift Valley Fever viruses have their roots in Africa, a volatile area where political instability raises concerns about the misuse of these deadly microbes by terrorists.
He said that any new intelligence information indicating that Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda have secretly developed nuclear weapons had nothing to do with the decision of expanding the search to East Africa, Eureka reports.
The article describes how CTR, which began in the former Soviet Union, is being expanded to confront the threat of bioterrorism in other regions of the world. (ANI)
