Washington, Jan 27 (DPA) US consumer confidence continued to fall to new lows in the first month of 2009 as the world’s largest economy struggles through a serious recession, a private research group said Tuesday. The New York-based Conference Board said its consumer confidence index fell 0.9 points to 37.7 in January, the lowest since records began in 1967.

“It appears that consumers have begun the New Year with the same degree of pessimism that they exhibited in the final months of 2008,” Lynn Franco, director of the Conference Board Consumer Research Centre, said in a statement.
