US, British embassies in Yemen still closed over terror threats (Lead)
January 4th, 2010 - 3:52 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Sana’a (Yemen), Jan 4 (DPA) The US and British embassies in Sana’a extended their closure for the second day Monday over terrorist threats, a Yemeni government official said.
The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the two embassies were “reviewing their security measures in light of threats”.
He said security authorities were also assessing the situation.
The embassies in the Yemeni capital were closed Sunday amid terrorism threats threats from the regional branch of Al Qaeda, a Yemeni security source said earlier.
The source, who asked not to be named, said the two embassies had received intelligence about potential attacks.
The US embassy said in a so-called warden message posted on its website that is has closed “in response to ongoing threats by Al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula (AQAP) to attack American interests in Yemen”.
Hours after the US embassy closed, the British embassy also closed “for security reasons”, the BBC reported, citing Britain’s Foreign Office in London.
