US airline bans body scanner ad showing near-naked woman
May 27th, 2010 - 5:48 pm ICT by ANI ( Leave a comment )Melbourne, May 27 (ANI): American carrier Southwest Airlines has banned a raunchy advert featuring a near-naked woman in a body scanner.
The People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) had created the advert for the airlines’ inflight mag Spirit.
The commercial features the words “Be proud of your body scan: go vegan” displayed over the woman’s underwear.
But Southwest Airlines has distanced itself from the advert, saying it is “too provocative” for their mag.
“Unfortunately, because of the illustration used, the specific ad was not a good fit for publication in our magazine,” News.com.au quoted Southwest spokeswoman Marilee McInnis, as saying.
However, PETA is unhappy over the advert’s rejection, especially since the airline recently covered one of their planes with an image of a bikini-clad Sports Illustrated model and had favoured its flight attendants sporting hotpants in the past.
PETA’s Amy Skylark Elizabeth said: “Southwest Airlines rejected this ad saying that it was too provocative for their in-flight magazine, due to the lack of clothing the woman is wearing. Can I get a ticket to Prudes-ville via Hypocrite City, please?
“A Sports Illustrated swimsuit model’s image on a plane is ok, but an ad with metal undies is too much?” (ANI)
