Unruly Britons allowed to swear at police
June 27th, 2011 - 6:29 pm ICT by IANSLondon, June 27 (IANS) Unruly people in Britain can now swear or use foul language at police officials without fear of arrest, according to a new regulation.
The new guidance drawn up by police chiefs at Scotland Yard says British courts do not accept that foul language cause officers any “harassment or distress”, The Sun reported.
Use of curses do not justify making an arrest, says the regulation issued to London’s Metropolitan Police.
It warns police officials that in the past compensation had to be paid in cases where courts ruled that bad language alone was an “insufficient” reason to detain someone.
Peter Smyth of the Metropolitan Police Federation called the new rules “patronising”.
“Officers don’t need to be told how to do their job. They are pretty robust about language,” he said.
