UN security council to meet on Libya
February 26th, 2011 - 3:59 am ICT by IANSUnited Nations, Feb 26 (IANS) The UN Security Council will hold a closed door meeting Friday to decide upon its response to the prevailing situation in Libya.The Security Council is expected to kick off the closed door meeting at 3 p.m. local time to discuss the issues on peace and security in Libya, Xinhua reported.
UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon will brief the meeting to “once again underscore his grave concerns” about the situation in the north African country, Ban’s spokesman Martin Nesirky told the media.
The Security Council, in a statement issued Tuesday, expressed its regret over the reported death of hundreds of civilians in the mass protests and called for “an immediate end to the violence”.
In the statement supported by all 15 members, the Security Council called on the Libyan government “to meet its responsibility to protect its population”, to act with restraint, and to respect human rights and international humanitarian law.
