UN chief asks Nepalese parties to make ‘utmost effort’ to reach consensus

United Nations, April 30 (ANI): UN Secretary-general Ban Ki-moon has asked Nepalese parties to exert “the utmost effort” in reaching consensus, with Nepal’s constitutional deadline less than one month away.

Consensus needs to be reached on outstanding issues, which include the “integration and rehabilitation of Maoist army personnel and fundamental issues regarding the new constitution,” Ban said in a statement.

According to him, Nepal’s peace process has already delivered significant achievements. However, the process remains overdue and incomplete due to continuing differences among the parties.

“All parties need to exercise maximum flexibility in seeking a common political ground to enable them to fulfill their commitments, including the adoption of a new constitution by the Constituent Assembly,” Xinhua quoted Ban, as saying.

The United Nations will continue to support the parties in their efforts, he added.

The peace process that ended a 10-year civil war in Nepal has remained stalled over the course of the last year, with tensions and mistrust between Maoists, the government and army threatening its very survival. (ANI)
