UN calls on world to collect $1.44 bn for quake-hit Haiti
February 19th, 2010 - 2:04 pm ICT by IANSUnited Nations, Feb 19 (IANS/RIA Novosti) The UN has called on the international community to collect $1.44 billion in aid for Haiti, which was hit by a devastating quake last month.
The UN had earlier called to collect $575 million, half of which has been already received.
A 7.0 magnitude earthquake devastated Haiti Jan 12. Estimates as to the final death toll in the earthquake range to over 220,000 in and around the capital Port-au-Prince.
More than three million people have been left without shelter.
The collected money will be used to deliver food, water, medicine and to provide security. Restoration work is funded separately.
