UK’s first female Muslim peer baroness claimed 100K pounds in alowances
November 19th, 2009 - 7:32 pm ICT by ANILondon, Nov.19 (ANI): Britain’s first female Muslim peer, Baroness Uddin, claimed 100,000 pounds in parliamentary allowances by registering her main home, a property that she barely occupied. According to The Telegraph, she was the first peer to be probed for her use of the 174-pound-a-night subsistence allowance in early May this year.
Lady Uddin, 50, was born in Bangladesh but became a Labour councillor in East London - as well as a friend of the Blairs - and was elevated to the House of Lords in 1998.
As a result of designating a property in Maidstone, Kent, as her main home, she has been entitled to claim the overnight subsistence allowance available to peers who live outside the capital and need somewhere to stay when they attend Parliament.
Lady Uddin has received an estimated 30,000 pounds a year under the allowance since buying the two-bedroom flat in 2005.
However, neighbours claim it has often been empty.
Baroness Uddin is said to spend much of her time with her family in a rented flat in Wapping.
Michal Pownall, the Clerk of the Parliaments, who is the official accounting officer of the House of Lords, announced an investigation into her claims after a complaint was made.
Lady Uddin was unavailable for comment. (ANI)
