Kiev, Dec 13 (THAINDIAN NEWS) Ukraine is planning to open the Chernobyl reactor plant to visitors in 2011. Until now, the area around the Chernobyl reactor used to be sealed, but this seems to be a thing of the past now with the latest decision from the Ministry of Emergency Situations, to make it a tourist attraction. The exact date when the tourists can visit the region is yet to be finalized.

This decision is sure going to whet the appetites of all those people who are curious about the disaster that struck about 25 years ago. It may be recalled that one of Chernobyl’s reactors blasted on the 26th of April 1986 and in the process caused a problem of epic magnitude. Millions of people needed to be displaced from their locations in Ukraine, Russia and Belarus to other places because of contamination fears. And the saddest part is that the radiation that caused the tragedy affects many people till today. The victims and their families suffer from many health related problems till date.

According to The Associated Press, Emergency Situations Ministry spokeswoman Yulia Yershova said that, “There are things to see there if one follows the official route and doesn’t stray away from the group. Though it is a very sad story.”
