Arsenal London, Apr 10 (ANI): Women’s football in England is all set to become professional after 90 years, with the launch of a new Women’s Super League (WSL).

Chelsea and Arsenal will contest the first match of the inaugural Women’s Super League on Wednesday.

The new summer league comes just after four decades since the women’s game was recognised in the country.

Even though this is potentially a major step forwards for women’s football, it remains a semi-professional operation with eight clubs made up of 20-strong squads in the fledgling WSL working within vastly different financial parameters to the men.

Unlike the men though, where spending on salaries and players has been to many eyes, out of control, the new WSL is taking a practical and sensible approach to financing.

While the men’s Premier League allows unlimited foreign players to enter the English game on unlimited salaries, the women will introduce salary-capping from the very start of their operation, The Sky News reports.

For the WSL, only four players from a squad of 20 will be allowed to earn more than 20,000 pounds a year with an annual budget per club of around 250,000 pounds.

The WSL will look to Germany and the USA as models for the new league. (ANI)
