London, Dec 31 (ANI): The government of the UK has introduced a new ‘divorce calculator’ that works out the cost of splitting up for couples who wish to go their separate ways.

Created by Cambridge-based digital marketing agency Omobono, the ‘My Divorce And Separation Calculator’ helps couples draw up budgets, a review of debts and post-split financial scenarios.

They have to enter their wages, outgoings, ingoings, mortgage payments and debts and can also add their partner’s financial information to find who gets the bigger cut.

But Stephen Green, national director of lobby group Christian Voice, expressed his anxiety over the development.

“The vows many people make on their wedding days are nothing more than hot air because according to the gospel marriage is supposed to be for life,” the Daily Mail quoted him as saying.

“If this Government divorce calculator leads people to consider how expensive divorce is going to be then that will be a good thing,” he added.

“It suggests that divorce is socially acceptable and that’s worrying because financial calculations don’t take into account the emotional cost to children and parents.”

Amanda Owens, a family law solicitor from Steeles Law’s, based in Norwich, Norfolk, said many couples decide to divorce after Christmas.

“The culmination of weeks of Christmas shopping, visiting family and friends and cooking can stretch relationships and for some it’s the final straw,” she said.

“Add to this the increased financial pressures people face over Christmas and New Year and you can see why we get more calls in the first few days of January from couples wanting to separate or divorce than any other time of the year.

“So much so that January has been dubbed National Divorce Month.” (ANI)
