UK Defence Lab unveils ingenious CCTV that can help nab insurgents
May 30th, 2010 - 5:16 pm ICT by ANILondon, May 30 (ANI): Britain’s Defence Science Technology Laboratory (DSTL) has developed an innovative new CCTV camera that can effectively track insurgents.
Using cutting edge technology like thermal imaging the camera can be a godsend for soldiers and is expected to be incorporated into the defence campaigns by 2015.
The high resolution imaging with in-built software to detect and follow the fake insurgents as they planned their covert meeting, was one of the technologies tested by DSTL during what it described as a “cops and robbers” style trial, the BBC reports.
Insurgents cannot be detected merely by appearance, but are usually nabbed because of their suspicious behavioural tendencies, such as two vehicles meeting furtively etc.
“You can’t tell who is an insurgent by what they look like, but you can track their behaviour,” explained Andrew Seedhouse, chief technologist for sensors and countermeasures at DSTL.
Describing the CCTV camera as a powerful tool for surveillance Seedhouse said: “It’s like having the ultimate CCTV system with super-sensors on the ground and flying round in the air.” (ANI)
