Uighurs stage new protest as China hosts reporters
July 7th, 2009 - 12:31 pm ICT by IANSBeijing, July 7 (DPA) Several hundred Uighurs staged a protest Tuesday as Chinese officials took a group of foreign journalists on a tour of Urumqi, the riot-hit capital of the far western region of Xinjiang.
The protesters sat down after they were blocked by riot police, reporters in Urumqi said.
It was not immediately known how the protest ended, and it was not reported by state media.
An official in Urumqi, at the government press centre responding to questions on the recent unrest, refused to confirm if any new protest had taken place.
State media Tuesday said police in Xinjiang had ended a protest by Uighurs in a second city after the rioting that left more than 150 dead in Urumqi Sunday and Monday.
Police in Kashgar, China’s westernmost city, dispersed more than 200 Uighurs who gathered Monday evening at the city’s Id Kah Mosque, the Xinhua news agency quoted officials as saying.
Police in Urumqi had arrested more than 1,400 suspects after the earlier rioting there, the agency said.
