UAE’s Sheikha Fatima named UN goodwill ambassador
October 15th, 2010 - 9:56 pm ICT by IANSRome, Oct 15 (IANS/WAM) The UAE’s Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak, chairperson of the NGO General Women Union, was Friday named extraordinary goodwill ambassador of the UN Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO).
FAO director general Jacques Diouf said Sheikha Fatima was given the coveted title in recognition of her efforts and support for women’s causes.
She was lauded for her role in women’s education, irradiation of illiteracy and promoting women’s rights in the Arab world.
Sheikha Fatima is the fourth person to receive the honour after first ladies Suzzane Mubarak of Egypt, Maria Gloria Penayo de Duarte of Paraguay and Margarita Cedeno de Fernandez of the Dominican Republic.
