UAE welcomes Palestine’s Unesco membership
November 1st, 2011 - 11:46 pm ICT by IANSAbu Dhabi, Nov 1 (IANS/WAM) The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has welcomed Palestine’s membership of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs Anwar Mohammed Gargash said this was one of the positive steps that would help Palestine in the international arena.
He said UAE congratulates the people of Palestine and its leaders on the historic achievement, which was the result of “conscious diplomacy” adopted by the Palestinian National Authority with support from friendly countries.
In a vote Monday at the 193-member UN agency’s general conference in Paris, the Palestinian National Authority (PNA) got 107 votes for its membership bid, with 14 countries against. A total of 52 countries abstained, a Unesco statement said.
