UAE urges UN to adopt Goldstone report on Israel
November 5th, 2009 - 10:11 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )New York, Nov 5 (IANS) The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has urged the UN to implement the recommendations of the Goldstone report that investigated alleged crimes committed by Israel during its brief war against the Gaza militants early this year, WAM news agency reported Thursday.
The UAE stressed the need to refer the report to the Security Council to take appropriate action under the charter of the UN and international law.
In addition, Israel should identify its officials responsible for committing the alleged crimes during the brief war that ended in January in Gaza Strip.
UAE permanent representative to the UN, Ahmed Abdul Rahman Al Jarman, said the report described serious violations of humanitarian law by the Israeli security forces.
He said the report included 36 incidents of crimes committed by Israel.
He also noted the military operation launched by Israel on the Gaza Strip was a violation of the international law in which at least 1,400 Palestinian civilians were killed.
He added that Israel’s policy of economic and political isolation in the Gaza Strip has deteriorated the humanitarian situation there.
Justice Richard Goldstone, a former South African judge, was appointed by the UN to conduct a study on the alleged violations of international humanitarian laws during the war between the Israeli Army and Islamic insurgents in December and January in the Gaza Strip.
