UAE becomes Unesco executive board member
November 4th, 2011 - 12:41 am ICT by IANSParis, Nov 3 (IANS/WAM) The United Arab Emirates (UAE) has become a member of the executive board of the UN Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (Unesco).
Education Minister Humaid Mohammed Al Qattami said the UAE received 144 votes out of a total of 186, topping the Arab group.
He said the win “reflected the huge respect the UAE enjoys worldwide” and the role it plays in helping out in global issues, especially in humanitarian areas.
Al Qattami headed the UAE delegation to the 36th Unesco session in Paris. He also met the agency’s Director General Irina Bokova and heads of other delegations.
