UAE anti-plastic bags campaign a hit with private sector

Abu Dhabi, May 5 (IANS/WAM) The United Arab Emirates’ move to keep the country free from plastic bags has won tremendous appreciation and support from the private sector.

The drive - UAE Free From Plastic Campaign - was launched by Environment Agency-Abu Dhabi (EAD) in February. In this, it was recommended to use environment-friendly bags instead of plastic bags for environment preservation and keep it free from plastic wastes.

The move comes within the framework of initiative launched by the UAE to ban the use of biodegradable plastic bags through a national programme to get rid of them gradually to reduce their negative effects on human health and other living organisms as a prelude to a final ban by the year 2013.

In 2009, the ministry of environment and water launched the initiative of the UAE Free from the Plastic Bags. Besides the decision issued by the Ministerial Council for Services, called for reduction of the use of plastic bags.

Fouzia Al Mahmoud, Director of the Department of Environment Education at EAD, expressed her pleasure about the private sector’s response towards the campaign.
