Aug 17, (THAINDIAN NEWS) Early on Monday, Orangeburg County Sheriff’s department recovered bodies of two toddlers named Ja’van T. Duley and Devean C. Duley, aged 18 months and 2 years respectively from the North Edisto River. The recovery was made after the state highway patrol was informed of an accidental skidding of a car off the road into the river. However, the department later on arrested Shaquan Duley, the mother of the toddlers who had accompanied the children and had reportedly walked away from the car to inform the police, in charges of abandoning the scene of accident. The South Carolina sheriff will address a news conference on Tuesday providing details on the case. An autopsy of the two toddlers is also scheduled to be conducted on Tuesday.
The accident reportedly occurred on Monday morning. The State Highway Patrol was notified about the accident at around 6:15 a.m. and told to rescue the two toddlers who were trapped inside the sinking car. The authorities sent divers to the scene and the car was lifted from the water. However, by the time the car was pulled out, the two toddlers had already died. Orangeburg County Sheriff Larry Williams said to media sources that Shaquan Duley was arrested because although she had mentioned that the two toddlers were involved in the accident, the investigators who went for the primary investigation were not convinced with her statement as there were not enough evidences pointing to an automobile accident.
Larry Williams maintained that the staffs of the department are investigating other aspects of the apparent accident adding that the department is “looking into all possibilities as to what happened”. The sheriff also held that some of the statements made by the lady are hard to believe.
