Tsunami warning lifted in quake-hit Japan (Second Lead)
April 11th, 2011 - 5:30 pm ICT by IANSTokyo, April 11 (IANS) A tsunami alert that was sounded after a magnitude-7.1 quake jolted Japan Monday evening was later lifted as the magnitude was revised to 7.0, the Japan Meteorological Agency said. There have been no immediate reports of damage or casualties.
The quake hit the eastern and northeastern regions of Japan at 5.16 p.m. (0816 GMT) and a tsunami warning was immediately issued, Xinhua reported.
The epicentre, at a depth of 10 km, was in Hamadori of Fukushima prefecture.
Swaying was strongly felt in buildings in Tokyo, some 200 km south of Hamadori.
Two-metre-high tsunami waves were expected to hit the Pacific coast in Ibaraki prefecture, the agency said and urged people to evacuate to higher locations.
Nuclear power stations in Ibaraki prefecture were normal after the quake, the plant’s operator said.
Japan Monday marked one month of the devastating magnitude-9 quake and tsunami that left 13,116 people dead. At least 14,377 people were still unaccounted for till Monday.
The operator of the Fukushima nuclear power plant that was badly hit by the March 11 quake-tsunami Monday said the latest quake briefly cut power but it was quickly restored.
