Kolkata, Oct 23 (IANS) A Trinamool Congress leader was critically injured after unidentified assailants shot at him Saturday in West Bengal’s Maoist-affected West Midnapore district, police said.

“Chunaram Soren, Trinamool Congress leader of Makle village in Goaltore, was shot at by a gang of armed miscreants in front of his residence Saturday evening. He sustained bullet injury in his trunk and was rushed to Midnapore Medical College and Hospital where his condition is reported to be critical,” said a senior police officer.

Trinamool Congress MP Subhendhu Adhikary alleged that Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leaders were behind the attack.

“The CPI-M with the help of the joint forces tried to eliminate Chunaram. They are killing our party men and holding the Maoists responsible behind the crime,” he said.

Police, however, said they were yet to identify the criminals.

“We are not ruling out any possibility and have initiated an investigation to find out those involved in the crime,” the police officer said.
